UK weather: 34C forecast next week… but not all of us will bask in the heat

Written by on 20/07/2019

Hot weather is set to return to the UK next week as a sweltering heatwave sweeps across Europe.

The heat is forecast to move into the south of the country early next week.

According to the Met Office, temperatures could potentially soar to 34C (93.2F) on Wednesday and Thursday – bringing “hot and humid” conditions.

A warm weather system is also going to take hold on the continent. Parts of southern Spain and southern France could see temperatures exceed 40C (104F) – weeks after they reached a record-breaking 45.9C (114.6F) in Gallargues-le-Montueux.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said: “Temperatures will build in Europe and are expected to rise to the high 30s and 40s.

“Some of the warm air will move north to southern and eastern England, spreading across the country with temperatures predicted to reach the high 20s and low 30s.”

Unfortunately, forecasters believe there will be a north-south divide, with northwestern parts of the UK experiencing spells of rain – which could be heavy at times – as well as strong winds, bringing a risk of coastal gales.

High pressure is going to build across England and Wales from Sunday onwards – bringing much warmer air from Europe.

Sky News weather producer Joanna Coles said: “Temperatures may reach up to 33C (91F) on Tuesday in the South East, this being close to the highest temperature of the year so far of 34C (93F) which was recorded at Heathrow on 29 June 2019.

“It’ll also be rather humid too and there’s a risk of isolated showers and thunderstorms developing towards midweek.”

A return to cooler weather is expected towards the end of next week.

The stint of hot weather in southern parts of the UK is expected to arrive after heavy rain and unsettled weather over the weekend.

The Met Office issued a severe yellow weather warning for downpours in South Wales on Friday morning, adding that heavy rain could spark travel chaos.

Locally heavy rain across Wales and South West England will spread northeast to all areas except northern Scotland, where it is expected to remain bright with isolated showers.

This could make “Frantic Friday” – where an extra 5.3 million drivers are on the roads – even more challenging.

Further thunderstorms and showers are expected on Saturday, with Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon saying the weekend’s weather will be “hit and miss” due to a band of rain moving in from the southwest.

He said: “That will still be clearing eastwards through Saturday morning, particularly along the east coast. In its wake there will be periods of brightness but there is a mixture of heavy, potentially thundery showers as well.

“In the sunshine it could feel quite pleasant, with temperatures potentially up to 24C (75.2F), but there are those heavy, potentially thundery showers across the UK that people may see.”
