Toyota recalls 55,000 hybrids in UK over ‘stalling’ fault

More than 55,000 hybrid cars have been recalled by Toyota in the UK due to possible stalling problems.
The carmaker is recalling 2.43 million of its hybrid vehicles worldwide, including 1.25 million in Japan, 807,000 in the US, 290,000 in Europe and 3,000 in China.
In rare cases they might not enter a “failsafe” driving mode, lose power and stall, the company warned.
Power steering and braking would still work. However, a car would be at increased risk of causing a crash if it stalled while at a fast speed.
Toyota said it had received three reports of the problem in Japan but they did not involve accidents.
They did not comment on reports of problems outside Japan.
Toyota Prius and Auris hybrids made between October 2008 and November 2014 are the models affected.
Toyota said it would update the software in the vehicles for free.
Satoru Takada, an analyst at Tokyo-based research and consulting firm TIW, said the impact of the recall couldn’t be assessed immediately but it “at least raised concerns as Prius is Toyota’s leading brand”.
Toyota shares ended slightly down on Friday.
In September it recalled more than one million hybrid cars globally due to a problem that could cause fires.
The carmaker has sold more than 12 million hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles around the world since 1997.
