Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris in furious half-time bust-up with Heung-Min Son against Everton
Written by News on 06/07/2020
Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris became embroiled in a furious bust-up with team-mate Heung-Min Son as they left the field for half-time against Everton.
Lloris appeared to take exception to Son not chasing down an opponent in the dying moments of the half, with his team leading 1-0, and the goalkeeper ran straight over to the forward after the whistle.
Son, who completed military service with South Korea in April, seemed to dismiss his skipper’s demonstrations and the pair had to be broken up by team-mates as Lloris became angrier and attempted to push his team-mate.
The pair were seen making up with a hug as the team prepared to return for the second half, but it was a surprising eruption after a good half for Spurs following their 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United last time out.
An own goal from Michael Keane, from Giovani Lo Celso’s shot, gave them the lead and they looked fairly in control until Son’s lack of a challenge allowed Everton to break and Richarlison to go close with a shot past Lloris just before the break.
Spurs eventually climbed to eighth in the Premier League table after holding out for a 1-0 victory over the Toffees.
Lloris plays down clash with Son
Speaking to Sky Sports, Lloris played down his half-time row with Son after the 1-0 win over Everton.
The Spurs captain said: “It just belongs to the changing room. Outside you can say whatever you want.
“There is a lot of respect between all the players. What happened between me and Son is just something that is part of football sometimes, but there is no problem at all.
“You can see at the end of the game we are more than happy to be part of the team and to have the three points. To concede a chance six seconds before half time because we don’t press properly. It annoyed me but it’s part of football, no problem, we move on.”
Mourinho: Lloris, Son clash beautiful
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho was delighted to see his players voicing their frustration with each other on the pitch.
“That’s beautiful,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s probably as a consequence of our meetings, so if you want to blame someone for that, it’s me.
“I was critical of my boys because in my opinion, they are not critical enough with themselves, with each other. I asked them to demand more from each other and put colleagues under pressure. It was the situation of the first half where an amazing kid, a team boy like Sonny, that the captain thought ‘you have to do more’.
“There were a couple of bad words. I don’t know if there was any push or more, but it’s something important for a team to grow up. I was really pleased. I had no doubt in the second half they would stick together until the end.”
Analysis: ‘You want to see players showing passion’
Jamie Redknapp on Sky Sports Premier League…
“For the Richarlison chance just before half-time, Son gives up on the ball. There’s a reaction, Lloris is proud, he doesn’t want to see anyone running at his back four. He shouts at Son, it’s probably the most exciting thing that’s happened in the half!
“This might be a consequence of what happened in the Sheffield United game, when he did make a challenge. He runs up to him, he puts Lo Celso in the way almost.
“I’ve seen it with Steve McManaman, Bruce Grobbelaar, and at least it shows they care. There wasn’t enough of that against Sheffield United, in the dressing room it’ll be sorted out quickly, they’ll shake hands, they’ll get on with it. You’ve got to have that sometimes.
“It’s not the first time it’s happened in football and it won’t be the last. You want to see players showing a bit of passion, and if he’s not doing his job Son, he’s got to get back, and he didn’t! Sometimes you have to let people know.
“That’s exactly what you want [as a manager]. You want your players to take responsibility rather than it always be the manager or the coaches. It’s put to bed now. They’ve got three points and Jose will be delighted with that.”
