Teenager stabbed to death after being ‘chased by man in hoodie’ in southeast London

Written by on 07/05/2019

A teenager has been stabbed to death in southeast London after being chased by a man “wearing a grey or blue hoodie” prior to the attack, police have said.

Officers were called to Tiverton Street in Southwark on Sunday at around 9.30pm where they found a man, aged 18, suffering from stab wounds.

London’s Air Ambulance also went to the scene.

The victim was taken to a south London hospital where he died shortly before 11pm.

The man has not been formally identified but his next of kin have been informed.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course and a crime scene remains in place.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard of the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: “The victim was seen being chased by another male wearing a grey or blue hoodie from Newington Gardens into Tiverton Street where he was attacked and shortly after found by police and London Air Ambulance.

“We need those who have information about the culprit(s) for this murder to get in touch with police immediately.”

He said: “Were you there? Did you see anything? Your information could prove vital to solving this case and I would urge you to get in touch.”

No arrests have been made but police say they have a number of active enquiries including reviewing CCTV footage, making house-to-house calls and forensic analysis at the scene.

The killing is the 28th fatal stabbing in the city so far this year.

Poet Theresa Lola, the Young People’s Laureate for London, tweeted: “Another stabbing in London, sigh, this time an 18- year-old in Southwark.

“Speechless, the victim was seen being chased by another man. When will the lives of young people be valued and prioritised in a time of clear crisis.”
