Streatham terrorist Sudesh Amman died of gunshot wounds to neck and stomach, inquest hears

Written by on 26/02/2020

A terrorist who stabbed two people on Streatham High Road died because of gunshot wounds to the neck and stomach, an inquest has heard.

Sudesh Amman was shot dead by two police marksmen after the attack on 2 February.

The inquest into his death opened at Southwark Coroners Court on Wednesday.

DCI Matthew Gosling told the coroner that a post mortem carried out on 4 February recorded the death as shock and haemorrhage and gunshot wounds to the neck and abdomen.

He said the 20-year-old left the accommodation he was staying in at 1:22pm on 2 February and walked to the Low Price Store on Streatham High Road.

In a matter of minutes he had stolen a knife from a display in the shop and began stabbing members of the public outside.

Armed officers, who had been monitoring him, shot the terrorist dead around a minute after he had stolen the knife.

The inquest heard that officers then withdrew after seeing what appeared to be a suicide vest around Amman’s waist. The device was later confirmed to be a hoax.

Senior coroner Andrew Harris offered his condolences to his family, who had a representative in court.

Amman was jailed in December 2018 for spreading extremist material and had been released from prison just days before the attack.

After the incident 51-year-old nursery school teacher Monika Luftner and a man in his 40s were taken to hospital with stab injuries and have since been discharged.

The coroner said the inquest may need to be heard by a High Court judge if it concerns matters of national security.
