Nick Daws wants Scunthorpe job full-time after play-off defeat to Rotherham

Nick Daws has told Sky Sports he wants to manage Scunthorpe full-time after their season ended with defeat in the play-offs.

Daws took over in the manager’s hotseat at Glanford Park in March following Graham Alexander’s dismissal, and was unbeaten in the club’s final seven games of the season.

A 2-2 draw in the first leg of the play-off semi-final kept their tie with Rotherham in the balance, but a 2-0 win for the Millers – and the first against Daws since he took over – ended their season on Wednesday night, but perhaps not the caretaker manager’s spell.

“I’ll be sitting down in the chairman,” he told Sky Sports. “We’ve had a couple of conversations, he knows how I feel about the football club, I’d be immensely proud to take it on beyond this, once we’ve got over this.

“I’ll sit down with him tomorrow once the dust has settled and see where we go. I’m disappointed for him, it’s three years on the trot we’ve almost got there, but we’ve just got to fight and come back stronger.

“In both boxes, it got away from us. To concede just before half-time, from the long throw, was really disappointing. We opened up really well, caused them a lot of problems but not enough in the final third, in and around the box. We got some crosses in, and some attempts, but not enough bodies in there.”

Opposite number Paul Warne paid tribute to the Iron after being left indebted to goalkeeper Marek Rodak for ensuring their progression to the final – and revealed how he had managed to switch off from the build-up to the game.

“I thought Scunthorpe were excellent,” he said. “They played the conditions better than us and the pressure. They created a lot of chances, our goalkeeper had to get us out of jail a few times, but luckily we got a couple of goals and the lads dug it out,

“Every football fan wants to go to Wembley, and when we took over in the summer I brought in staff, signed new players and the intention was to put smiles back on people’s faces, play attacking football and the season we’ve had has lived up to that. I’m really proud of the lads, and to finish it off with a day at Wembley – I’m really pleased.

“I went to the cinema this morning with my wife to watch Deadpool 2 – which I recommend everyone watch, it’s very funny and took my mind off it. After that, I had a recruitment meeting, and then beat my assistant at squash.”
