Moeen Ali and Ben Foakes rally England after tourists sink to 93-6
Written by News on 31/01/2019
Moeen Ali and Ben Foakes lifted England to 172-6 by tea on day one of the second Test after the tourists’ top six – save for Jonny Bairstow – were razed by Windies’ seamers.
Bairstow was the shining light of the top order, smiting a quickfire 52 as wickets tumbled around him before he was pinned lbw by Kemar Roach shortly after lunch at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
Ben Stokes (14) snicked the burly Shannon Gabriel behind shortly afterwards to leave England 93-6 on a green Antigua pitch.
But Ali (55no) – having bagged a pair in England’s 381-run thumping in Barbados – and Foakes (32no) combined for an unbroken stand of 79, Ali reaching his 14th Test fifty from 69 balls after carving Jason Holder for four.
Joe Root (7) was dismissed by a brute of a delivery from Alzarri Joseph in the morning session, the paceman getting extravagant bounce after pitching the ball on a good length and taking Root’s bat handle.
Joe Denly – in for Keaton Jennings as opener – was out for six on debut, having survived a tight lbw review on nought, while Jos Buttler (1) and Rory Burns (4) also failed to significantly trouble the scorers.
