Singer Tom Fletcher made the announcement on Twitter, and confirmed McFly were working on new music – with the first single from their long-awaited new album reportedly due to drop later this month.

Record label BMG congratulated the band on Twitter on signing their new deal.

A show at London’s O2 Arena back in November marked the start of the group’s comeback and sparked plans for a national tour this year, which was ultimately postponed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Last year, the band – made up of Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd – released a number of “lost” tracks and old recordings for fans, whetting their appetite for more music.

The group have all worked on a number of other projects away from McFly, and have previously said that they nearly split up thanks to rifts in the band.

At one point, they even considered going to therapy together in an effort to settle their differences, drummer Judd told the BBC.

McFly’s last studio album came in 2010, and they later went on to form the super-group McBusted with members of Busted.

Since then, Fletcher has written a number children’s books, some with Poynter, while Judd has toured with a dance show following his win on Strictly Come Dancing and Jones has launched a solo music career.

The band’s postponed comeback tour is due to start in October, but COVID-19 restrictions on live performances and public gatherings could plunge the shows into doubt.

In April, the band re-recorded their track All About You for charity from their individual homes during lockdown.
