Joe Root expects seamers to star for unchanged England against South Africa at Trent Bridge

Written by on 13/07/2017

Joe Root is expecting his seamers to come to the fore at Trent Bridge as an unchanged England prepare for Friday’s second Test against South Africa, live on Sky Sports.

England’s four pace bowlers delivered just 10 second-innings overs between them at Lord’s last week as Moeen Ali and debutant Liam Dawson spun out the tourists to give their side a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

Both spinners keep their spots for Friday, but swing and seam traditionally play a part in Nottingham, where England dismissed Australia for just 60 in 2015 on their last visit to the ground.

Stuart Broad was the star that day with 8-15, and Root said: "We’ve got great memories of here, and Stuart’s excited for another opportunity to bowl on his home ground.

"We’ve played some good cricket here in the last four or five years, and we want to make sure that continues this week."

Broad will be joined in the England attack by Mark Wood, Ben Stokes and long-time opening partner James Anderson.

Root said: "We’re going in with the same team. It gives us a great balance if spin does come into it later in the game, but it might be that our seamers play a bigger part this week and that excites me.

"People like Stuart, Jimmy, Woody and Stokesy only bowled a handful of overs in the second innings last week – it means they’re nice and fresh, and when they get the opportunity they’ll still be pretty fresh coming into the second innings later on in this game."

Anderson has been managing his own workload in training this week, and the captain said: "Jimmy knows his body. Obviously he’s had a couple of injury issues, so he’s just being smart with the way he practises."

The unchanged line-up means another chance at the top of the order for Keaton Jennings and Gary Ballance, both of whom got starts at Lord’s without escaping the 30s.

"They’re desperate to do well," Root said, "and I thought the way they played in the second innings was worth at last double on a very difficult wicket."

South Africa will have skipper Faf du Plessis back in charge at Trent Bridge, and his opposite number is anticipating a response to their 211-run defeat in the opener.

"They pride themselves on coming back from defeats like last week’s," he said. "I expect them to be right on it from the first ball on Friday morning."

Du Plessis returns after missing the start of the series opener in order to remain in South Africa following the birth of his first child, with out-of-nick JP Duminy making way, while paceman Kagiso Rabada is suspended, controversially, for swearing after dismissing Ben Stokes last week.

England: JE Root (captain), AN Cook, KK Jennings, GS Ballance, JM Bairstow(wkt), BA Stokes, MM Ali, LA Dawson, SCJ Broad, MA Wood, JM Anderson.
