Ex-Wales striker Dean Saunders told ‘you can’t even stand’ in arrest footage

Former Wales footballer Dean Saunders was told “you can’t even stand up” in newly-released footage of his arrest.
The clip, released by the Crown Prosecution Service, shows Saunders being stopped for his “atrocious” driving, before being put into the back of a police car.
Chester Magistrates’ Court was told that Saunders’ Audi A8 car was seen weaving across the road, swerving to avoid other vehicles and almost causing an accident.
The footage shows a police officer saying: “Get out the car. Your driving is atrocious. Have you had any alcohol?”
Saunders replies: “Er, I’ve had one pint.”
As he gets out of his car, the officer tells him: “You can’t even stand up.”
Saunders failed to provide a breath sample, and once he reached the police station, extended footage shows police telling him he is required to provide a sample or be charged with failing to provide one.
Saunders asks: “Am I getting myself in more trouble by not doing it?”
An officer responds: “It has been explained to you but you have consistently refused to provide a sample.”
Saunders replies: “No, I haven’t consistently refused to do anything. Have I refused to do anything? Right now? Even though I am waiting for my solicitor?”
The footballer initially denied committing any offences, but was jailed for 10 weeks on Wednesday after admitting failing to comply with a roadside breath test and failing to provide a breath specimen.
Passing sentence, District Judge Nicholas Sanders told Saunders he was “arrogant” for his “obstructive and evasive” behaviour with police.
Saunders was released yesterday, one day into his sentence, after his lawyers secured bail until an appeal against his jail sentence can be heard on 4 October.
He has been banned from driving for 30 months and ordered to pay court costs of £620.
