Eoin Morgan says England’s one-day side have reached ‘new level’ after latest win over Australia

England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan says the one-day side has reached a “new level” following their latest comfortable victory over Australia.
Morgan’s side completed their second-highest successful ODI run chase on Thursday in Durham to go 4-0 up in the five-match series against Australia.
It came just two days after they smashed a world-record 481 at Trent Bridge, and England go into the final match at Old Trafford on Sunday chasing an unprecedented series whitewash over their rivals.
Asked for his thoughts on England’s destructive batting, Morgan said: “If it does become the ‘normal’, that would be awesome – because it creates an unbelievable tone at the top of the order.
“I think the form the guys are in is phenomenal. I think we’ve found a new gear, or a new level of intensity.”
The competition for places at the top of the order for England is so great that Alex Hales – who top-scored with 147 at Trent Bridge – has already admitted that he is unsure of his place in the starting XI.
Morgan said: “I’m glad we’re spoiled for guys in form at the moment, because I’ve been in teams where (those) next in or fighting for places can’t get a run. This is a very privileged position to be in.”
Despite his joy at England’s batting success, captain Morgan still believes England can improve their bowling after allowing Australia to score 310 with their 50 overs at Trent Bridge.
“We didn’t take wickets, which is an area we hope to improve, but we certainly controlled the run-rate”, said Morgan.
“We always kept Australia within our grasp, certainly until the last eight to 10 overs when they were in position to get away from us.
“We’ve played that sort of cricket in the past, and know it falls on a couple of guys to do really well – or else it can go badly – and Dave [Willey] stepped up to the plate and bowled really well.”
