The Duchess of Cornwall has opened a new kennels, with the help of her pet dog Beth and a sausage.
Camilla unveiled a plaque at the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home Old Windsor centre, where she is the animal rescue charity’s royal patron.
But it was her Jack Russell dog who did the honours after a sausage was tied around a rope attached to the curtain commemorating the opening.
The Duchess of Cornwall said: “Now they say you should never work with animals, and now, with the help of Beth, I’m going to attempt to unveil a building with the help of a dog.”
Beth grabbed the sausage and pulled the cloth away, with Camilla cheering “brilliant” and adding: “Anyone would think you’ve never been fed.”
Facilities at the new kennels use sensory plants and music to try and reduce stress and infections for mothers and puppies. They include four heated blocks, each with a chill-out room, dedicated puppy kennels and a separate maternity area.
Camilla’s two Jack Russell terriers, Beth and Bluebell, were both adopted from the charity, and she revealed Bluebell had been left in the car for her visit after hurting her leg.
The Duchess was among several Royal Family members seen with the Queen this week for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Her Majesty, 94, was also joined by the Prince of Wales, Prince William and Kate, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, and the Princess Royal, who all stood socially distant by the steps of Windsor Castle.
A Salvation Army band played festive tunes as three generations of royals enjoyed a Christmas carol performance – with the monarch singing along quietly.
