‘Disgustingly expensive’: Manchester United fans react to £183 price tag for new home kit

Written by on 17/07/2018

Manchester United have unveiled their most expensive home kit to date, sparking anger among some fans.

The Red Devils 2018/19 season strip features an “authentic” adults’ version of the football shirt, shorts and socks costing a total of £182.85.

On the adidas website, the shirt is £109.95, the shorts are £42.95 and the socks are £29.95.

Shirts for children cost £49.95, with shorts costing an additional £24.95.

Fans debated over the kit’s price point following its release on Tuesday.

“You need brain surgery if you’re going to play £183 for @ManUtd new kit! £30 for a pair socks! My monthly mortgage in 1991 was £71!” one person tweeted.

Another described the new kit as “disgustingly expensive”, while someone else said: “What inspired the extortionate price? Greed?”

Other United fans reacted positively to the new design, with someone tweeting: “That new home kit looks nice can’t wait to get it”.

Richard Arnold, group managing director at United, said in a statement: “There are many great moments in this club’s fantastic history, and none more so important than the year the club was founded, back in 1878.

“This shirt from adidas pays homage to the year we were founded, and marks 140 years of footballing success.”

A less expensive version of the £109.95 adult home shirt, as part of the “normal kit”, will set fans back £64.95.

The shorts cost £34.95 and socks £16.95, meaning the cheaper kit costs £116.85 at a £66 difference to the “authentic” version.

In comparison, Arsenal’s “authentic” shirts for next season are slightly cheaper at £100 via the club’s online store, while Liverpool’s most expensive shirt costs £70.

United’s new home jersey features a train track graphic at the base – inspired by the club’s original name, Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club.

Some of the club’s star players including Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba are seen modelling the new kit in professional shots on the adidas website.
