How do you solve a problem like traffic congestion around the Hollywood sign? You build another one.
That’s just one of the solutions put forward by a consultancy firm tasked with coming up with ways to alleviate traffic around the iconic sign, which has become a frustration for residents.
Dixon Resources Unlimited, which has pitched dozens of ideas to Los Angeles officials, has suggested the second sign could go on the other side of the hill, facing towards the suburban San Fernando Valley.
Among the other potential projects to draw visitors elsewhere are an educational centre to teach people about the sign’s history, an electric shuttle connecting other stops in the area, and an aerial tram gliding from the northern end of Griffith Park, which is where the sign is located.
The Los Angeles Times said on Wednesday that the report had cost $120,000 (£86,382), with the firm having approached residents, business owners and community groups, in addition to carrying out surveys, before presenting its findings to the city council.
Some of the more mundane ideas to come out of the report include installing directional signs, adjusting parking restrictions and introducing designated pick-up and drop-off stops for taxi drivers.
City councilman David Ryu said the study was long overdue.
“This is a world-renowned icon, and possibly the only one without proper access to it,” he said.
“It’s like having the Statue of Liberty without a visitors’ centre, viewing platform, or even a sign telling you how to get to it. It is unsustainable and unsafe.”
The council will examine the suggestions listed in the report before deciding whether any of them are feasible.
