Coronavirus: UK records 413 COVID-related deaths in latest daily figures

Written by on 08/11/2020

Another 413 people with coronavirus have died across the UK in the latest 24-hour period – 58 more than the number reported on Friday, government figures show.

The number of people testing positive for COVID-19 has also risen, to 24,957. It is an increase of 1,670 over Friday’s figure of 23,287.

In England, 283 fatalities have been announced, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals in the country to 34,374.

In Wales, another 958 cases of coronavirus have been recorded, with the number of deaths going up by 32, taking the total since the start of the pandemic to 2,014.

On Friday, it emerged that the UK’s coronavirus reproduction (R) number had remained between 1.1 and 1.3 – the same as the previous week, government scientists said.

The R number is used to determine how quickly coronavirus is spreading, representing the average number of people each person with the illness goes on to infect.

The latest figures come as the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) warned it was too late to find the nurses needed to meet the demands of an “extremely challenging” winter – with 40,000 vacancies in England alone.

The union now called on the government to “be honest” about the risks a lack of staff could pose to patient safety.

It comes after NHS England moved its highest alert level to deal with COVID-19 cases after the number of coronavirus patients in hospitals rose to more than 11,000.
