Coronavirus: 35 deaths in UK – a rise of 14 in a day

Written by on 15/03/2020

The number of people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK has risen by 14 – the largest increase in a 24-hour period.

There are now a total of 35 fatalities.

There have been 1,372 confirmed infections – a rise of 232 in a day.

The number of people tested has risen to 40,279, with 38,907 proving to be negative.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock had told Sky News that over-70s would be asked to self-isolate “in the coming weeks” and America has added Britons to a ban on travellers from Europe.

Bristol Royal Infirmary said one of the deaths was a patient there in his late-50s who had underlying health conditions.

In Wales, health authorities confirmed 34 new cases on Sunday, bringing the country’s total to 94.

And in Spain, the number of coronavirus deaths has more than doubled in a day to 288, with nearly 8,000 infections now confirmed.

The UK Foreign Office has warned against all but essential travel to the United States – hours after Washington said a ban on UK and Irish flights to the US would be introduced.
