Britain’s Johanna Konta has been knocked out of Wimbledon by Venus Williams in the women’s singles semi-finals.
She was the only hope of home glory after Andy Murray’s knockout yesterday.
Konta lost the match 4-6, 2-6 having made history by progressing so far in the competition. She is the first British woman to reach the top four in almost 40 years.
Konta wrote in a post on Twitter after the match: "Thank you to everyone for the love and support over these past 2 weeks."
Williams paid tribute to her opponent after the match, saying Konta "handled the pressure".
"I’ve played a lot of finals here," she said. "One more win will be amazing. It won’t be a given but I’ll give it my all.
"The crowd were very nice to me. The crowd were so fair, I know they love Jo…
"No point was easy. I tried to climb on top and get another point."
Williams is now through to the final, hoping to add to her five singles and six doubles titles at the All England Club.
She will face Spain’s Garbine Muguruza on Saturday at 2pm.
Another British hopeful, Jamie Murray, has made it through to the mixed singles semi-finals with his Swiss partner Martina Hingis.
