Birmingham: Murder investigation launched after man dies in hit and run

Written by on 26/12/2020

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was killed in a suspected hit and run in Birmingham on Boxing Day.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Coton Lane, Erdington, shortly before 6am and found the man with “serious head injuries”.

He died a short while later and police have launched a murder investigation, as they believe he was struck in a “deliberate act” by a car which fled the scene.

Work is under way to fully understand what happened.

Images taken from the scene show a blue tent erected in the road by forensic teams, who began combing the area for clues shortly after 9am.

Detective Sergeant Nick Barnes, from West Midlands Police’s homicide team, said: “My thoughts are with the family of the man who tragically died this morning.

“We’re in the early stages of our investigation and I’d urge anyone who witnesses anything who hasn’t yet spoken to us, or anyone with any information or dash cam footage to get in touch as soon as they can.

“A family have lost a loved one and we need to find out what took place and who is responsible.”

MP for Erdington Jack Dromey told Birmingham Live the incident was “senseless and savage”.

“The police are mounting a major operation to track down the evil perpetrator and to ensure that the community is reassured that the police service is doing everything possible to protect their safety and well-being,” he added.

Anyone with any information should contact West Midlands Police via the live chat on their website, or by calling 101 quoting log number 688 of 26 December.
