EFL investigation into Marcelo Bielsa ‘Spygate’ to continue

Written by on 09/02/2019

The EFL has announced it is continuing its investigation into the ‘Spygate’ controversy surrounding Marcelo Bielsa as there are “a number of areas that require further exploration and clarification”.

Leeds head coach Bielsa admitted to having spied on all of his side’s opponents this season after a club employee was removed from the perimeter of Derby’s training ground the day ahead of the January 11 match between the two sides.

The EFL Board met on Friday to consider the matter, but say “there remain a number of areas that require further exploration and clarification and these investigations will take place at the earliest opportunity.”

Derby said a Leeds employee was removed from the perimeter of their training ground by police.

Bielsa took full responsibility for the incident, and said he had been sending staff to observe opponents’ training sessions since his time in charge of Argentina, which began in 1998.

The EFL Board that met to discuss Spygate did not include representatives of the Championship.

Leeds said in a statement: “Leeds United acknowledge the statement made by the EFL this evening regarding an incident at Derby County’s training ground in January.

“We understand the EFL’s need to request more time to investigate the complaint further and we will continue to cooperate fully as we look to resolve the matter quickly.”
