Charlie’s Angels is to be rebooted with a whole new cast in the lead roles, led by Twilight star Kristen Stewart.
Based on the popular 1970s TV show about three female private detectives working for a mystery agency boss, the updated version will tell the story of a brand new generation of Angels.
British actresses Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska will play Stewart’s fellow angels.
While Scott is known for her role as pink ranger Kimberly in 2017 film Power Rangers, and will next be seen playing Jasmine in Disney’s 2019 live-action version of Aladdin, Balinska is a relative newcomer.
The 22-year-old, who trained at the Guildford School of Acting, is the daughter of TV chef Lorraine Pascal.
The film will be produced, directed and co-written by actress and director Elizabeth Banks.
Hunger Games star Banks, who last directed comedy musical Pitch Perfect 2, will also appear in the film playing the face of the Townsend Agency, Bosley.
Praising the TV original for its early celebration of empowered women, she said in a statement: “This film honours the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels.
“I couldn’t be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world.”
In this new version, the agency will go global, with the Los Angeles agency setting up security and intelligence services around the world.
But like the original, the detectives will still use a combination of brains, beauty and martial arts to solve the crimes.
The hugely popular TV series, which first aired in 1976, starred actresses including Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd during its five season run.
It was finally cancelled in 1981 after several casting changes and a decline in ratings.
A 2000 film based on the series, starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu, was a box office hit, but a sequel in 2003 received a less positive reception, both at the box office and from critics.
The reboot will be released in cinemas in September 2019.
