West Brom relegated from Premier League after Southampton beat Swansea

Written by on 09/05/2018

West Brom have been relegated from the Premier League after Southampton beat Swansea on Tuesday to end the Baggies’ eight-year stay in the top flight.

Southampton and Swansea were the only teams West Brom, in 19th, would have been able to catch prior to the game at the Liberty Stadium.

A draw would have kept the Baggies’ hopes of survival alive, but Saints’ 1-0 victory puts them five points clear of West Brom with only one game left to play.

Darren Moore had overseen three wins and two draws in his five games in caretaker charge of West Brom, and their relegation has now been confirmed just hours after he was named April’s Premier League Manager of the Month.

He took over from Alan Pardew, who left the club bottom of the league following just one win in 17 matches in what has been a disastrous campaign at The Hawthorns on and off the pitch.

John Williams and Martin Goodman were sacked as chairman and chief executive respectively in February, while Nick Hammond was relieved as technical director last month.

The new Chinese owners brought in Williams to replace Jeremy Peace in 2016, but failed to establish a connection with the coaching team in place.

Four Albion players were also questioned by police over the alleged theft of a taxi on a mid-winter training trip to Barcelona, with those four players forced to apologise for breaking a club curfew.

Swansea, meanwhile, are now on the brink of relegation after their defeat, which leaves them three points behind Saints – who have a better goal difference by nine.

Huddersfield are the only other club Swansea can catch, should the Terriers lose both their remaining Premier League fixtures and Swansea beat Stoke on the final day.

The Swans are three points behind Huddersfield but have a better goal difference by two. The two sides are level on goals scored.
