Fans to line streets of Liverpool for Sir Ken Dodd’s funeral

A horse-drawn hearse will lead the cortege at the funeral of comedian Sir Ken Dodd in Liverpool on Wednesday.
The streets of the entertainer’s home city are expected to be packed with fans keen to pay their respects to the star, who died aged 90 earlier this month.
He passed away peacefully at the same house he grew up in, just 48 hours after he married his partner of 40 years, Anne Jones.

The cortege will begin at 11am in East Prescot Road, with residents and visitors encouraged to line the route to the city’s Anglican cathedral, where the funeral service will be held from 1pm.
It will be open to the public and also broadcast on a large screen for mourners outside, with flags to be lowered at Liverpool Town Hall, St George’s Hall, the Cunard Building, and Central Library.

Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, said: “Although Wednesday will be a sombre occasion, it is an opportunity for us all to pay tribute to an unforgettable man and I can think of nothing more fitting than huge crowds lining the streets for his final act.
“There will never be another comedian like Ken, his passing marks the end of an era in British entertainment and I’m sure he’ll be tickled that the city will be putting on such a show in his honour.”
Tributes to Sir Ken flooded in after his death, including from stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, David Walliams, Carol Vorderman and Dawn French.
He was hailed as a “legend and an inspiration” and “one of the all-time greats”.
The funeral service will be followed by a private burial.
