England boss Gareth Southgate meeting Scott McTominay over international future

Written by on 02/03/2018

Gareth Southgate is meeting Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay on Friday to try to persuade him to play for England, Sky Sports News understands.

McTominay, who has produced some impressive performances for United’s first team this season, has already met with new Scotland boss Alex McLeish.

The Lancaster-born 21-year-old has been with United’s academy since the age of five but, somewhat surprisingly, has not played any international football at youth levels.

McTominay has Scottish grandparents and he has attended training camps with Scotland youth age groups, without ever being selected for a squad.

He made his United first-team debut at the end of last season, coming off the bench against Arsenal and then starting their season finale against Crystal Palace.

McTominay has made a further 15 appearances in all competitions this season, four of those coming in the Champions League.

United boss Jose Mourinho urged McLeish to make securing McTominay his priority soon after he was presented as Scotland’s long-term replacement for Gordon Strachan last month.
