Five members of El-Wahabi family presumed dead in Grenfell Tower fire

Written by on 18/06/2017

The names of those killed in the Grenfell Tower fire are beginning to emerge – with families and refugees among those who perished.

The El-Wahabi family

Relatives of the family have been told by police that they are all presumed dead, and are now waiting for official confirmation.

Abdul Aziz was 52, and his wife Fouzia was 42.

Their three children, 21-year-old Yasin, 16-year-old Nurhada and eight-year-old Mehdi are also thought to have died in the fire.

Khadija Khalloufi

Mrs Khalloufi, 52, died after she became separated from her husband, Sabah Abdullah, as they tried to escape.

The couple left their 17th floor flat when they were alerted to the fire by neighbours at 1.30am.

Due to the crush and panic in the stairwell, they were separated from each other between the 16th and 15th floors.

Mr Abdullah survived, suffering cuts to his feet after running out in his bedclothes. Mrs Khalloufi’s death was confirmed days after her family were told to expect the worse.

She and her husband had lived in the Grenfell Tower flat together for their entire 30-year marriage.

Mohammed Alhajali

Mr Alhajali, a 23-year-old civil engineering student, was the first victim of the fire to be formally identified by police.

He fled the war in Syria in 2014 and had not been able to see his family since.

He had tried to escape his 14th floor flat with his older brother Omar, but the pair became separated on the way down and Mohammed returned upstairs.

More than 65,000 people signed a petition calling for his parents to be given visas to come to the UK for his funeral.

The Home Office has since said it has assisted his family in "making arrangements for their travel to the UK in these terribly sad circumstances".

In a statement his family said: "Mohammad was a very amazing and kind person. He gave love to everyone. He came to the UK because he had ambitions and aims for his life and for his family.

"Our whole family will miss Mohammad dearly and he will never be forgotten."

Khadija Saye

Khadija Saye’s family have confirmed to Sky News that the 24-year-old, who lived on the 20th floor, died in the blaze.

Ms Saye’s mother, Mary Mendy, is still unaccounted for.

Tottenham MP David Lammy tweeted his condolences, writing: "May you rest in peace Khadija Saye. God bless your beautiful soul. My heart breaks today. I mourn the tragic loss of a wonderful young woman."

Miss Saye was an emerging artist whose photography is currently being exhibited at the Venice Biennale.
