Grenfell Tower fire victim asks: What’s next?

Written by on 17/06/2017

Aalya Moses is a victim of the Grenfell Tower fire and now faces the complicated and exhausting process of starting again, as she tells Sky’s Joe Tidy.

I want somebody to just pinch me so I can wake up because I feel like I’m in a dream.

I need to sleep but I’m now afraid to sleep in case I miss something happening.

I’ve only slept three hours since the fire.

I don’t know what I’m doing, I see people talking to me but I don’t hear the words coming out.

When I first walked into the aid centre I told them who I was and they asked me what I needed. I had no idea. "Everything" was my thought.

But they were amazing and just sat me down and helped.

The first thing to sort out was some ID to actually show that I lived there. With that I was at least able to go to the bank and get my bank cards and sort out birth certificate and passport.

I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people. The piles of donations are amazing and strangers have come up to me and given me money.

A lady gave my daughter £50 in Sainsbury’s as she must have seen me crying. I have messages of support from Scotland, Australia and even Qatar.

I am so grateful to all the people who have donated clothes.

Unfortunately there has not been a chance to try most of the clothing that they have given me and a lot of it will not fit. I need to go out and go shopping to get clothes that fit.

Cash is something that would be very useful at this stage. It would give me a sense of control as, at the moment, everything just feels out of control.

The council has given me a room to sleep in at Premier Inn but only for the next week or so. I don’t know where I’ll be after that.

The things I most miss about my home are my bed and my TV.

I have a disability so the TV was my main pastime but now I can’t even watch TV as every time I turn it on I see the tower.
