Westmorland General team take on Three Peaks Challenge for charity

Written by on 26/05/2021

An intrepid team of colleagues from Westmorland General Hospital is tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks to raise funds for Bay Hospitals Charity.

Porters Simon Makin, Adrian Tallon, Katie Shaw and Carl Smith, Assistant Porter Manager Jonathan Thompson, Switchboard Operator Mark Summerfield and Porter Allocator Amy Ferguson will climb Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside on Saturday June 5 to raise money for the installation of a mobile sensory unit on the Children’s Ward at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Amy said: “We wanted to do a challenge to raise money for a ward that does so much for children.

“The team on the ward do extraordinary work every single day, and we wanted to give them something in return.

“We chose climbing the Three Peaks because we wanted to do something that was not going to be easy to complete, would test us and show true commitment from us all as a team.”

Team members have been training for the 24-mile hike and are looking forward to taking on the challenge.

Amy said: “This is bound to be a huge challenge for us all, but we are all determined to complete it as a team raising as much as we can for this amazing charity.

“This year has been so difficult for everyone, and we feel by doing this we will raise money, awareness, bond as a team, have a good laugh and create some positivity.”

The team has already raised more than £2,000, which will be donated to Bay Hospitals Charity. The charity funds the latest equipment for University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust to help make patients more comfortable and ensure they get the best possible care and treatment.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive Aaron Cummins said: “It’s really brilliant to see the team spirit on display through this charity fund-raising effort. As well as getting together as a group of colleagues to take on a challenge, the team is showing support and appreciation for other members of the UHMBT family.

“Things like this are what makes our trust a really special place to work.”
