Davina McCall responds as troll calls her ‘old’ woman who ‘should cover up’

Davina McCall has responded to an online troll who described her as an “old, over sun-kissed woman” who “should cover up”.

Twitter user Sue made the comment as she retweeted a post of McCall in her outfit for The Masked Singer, for which the TV presenter is one of the judges, at the weekend.

“Stunning dress but not for the wrinkly crinkly,” the social media user also wrote.

McCall, 53, was good-natured in her reply, despite the insult, saying: “Absolutely no chance of demure over here sue… growing old disgracefully is far more fun.”

The TV star’s response has been liked thousands of times and she has received messages of support from fans.

The saying, “If you can’t saying something nice don’t say anything at all comes to mind”, one said.

“Old?!…how offensive,” another replied. “How sad it is that you felt the need to be so rude about someone’s appearance. Not everyone fits in the box you want to put them in. How about you do you Sue.”

Another Twitter user said: “Davina is a fantastic role model and looks amazing. Thank God she has also learnt not to be bothered by tweets from jealous women.”

On Instagram, fans noticed the star looked like she had indents on her leg, possibly from wearing leggings or skinny jeans before changing into the dress, and praised her for posting an unedited shot.

It is the latest example of celebrities calling out trolls on social media. Earlier in January, TV star Ulrika Jonsson wrote a column on the shaming of women with children by different fathers, after Loose Women presenter Stacey Solomon responded to an insulting comment on Instagram.

The Masked Singer is a Saturday night ITV show which sees stars performing in fancy dress for judges Jonathan Ross, Rita Ora, Mo Gilligan and McCall, their identities kept secret.

British actor and comedian John Thomson, known for his roles in Cold Feet, The Fast Show and Men Behaving Badly, was the latest celebrity to be unveiled after being voted out at the weekend.

The star, who performed as Bush Baby and threw the judges off the scent with an Australian accent, said after his departure that “secrecy when filming was major”.

He continued: “We were picked up by the driver who had signed an NDA and as we drew closer to the studio we had to don a mask, gloves and a sweatshirt with don’t speak to me on it so nobody could guess our identity.

“Trips from the dressing room to studio also incorporated full disguise.”
