Gary Lineker reportedly set to welcome a refugee to live in his home

Former England footballer Gary Lineker is reportedly going to welcome a refugee to live in his home with him.

The 59-year-old has been consistently critical of the government’s response to migrants crossing the English Channel, with Conservative MP Lee Anderson last month accusing him of “virtue signalling”, saying he should take in “the next boat of illegal immigrants”.

He responded by posting a screenshot of an email from the charity Refugees at Home.

In August, the Match Of the Day host said that the government had been “heartless and completely without empathy” over its response the crossings.

However, he is now set to welcome a refugee to come and live with him, according to The Mirror.

Lineker told the newspaper that he will have a home visit from the charity to assess his house, and that he does not know who his new guest will be, or where they are from.

“I have had so much connection with refugees over the last couple of years,” he told The Mirror.

“I have met scores of young refugees through football schemes and they are genuinely lovely kids and they appreciate any help they can get.

“I’m sure it will be fine. I have been thinking of doing something like that for a while.

“My kids are all grown up so I’ve got plenty of room so if I can help on a temporary basis then I’m more than happy to do so. Why not?”

It comes after a record 409 people reached UK in single day on Wednesday, significantly breaking the previous single-day record.
